Nicolas Almagro celebrates his victory

Nicolas Almagro celebrates his victory

Nicolas Almagro is still yet to drop a set at this year's French Open after ousting eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic to reach the quarter-finals.

Almagro, seeded 12th, reached the last eight for the third time in five years with a 6-4 6-4 6-4 success against Tipsarevic.

And the Spaniard, who has now won more matches on clay this season than any other man, hailed the victory as one of his best.

He said: "I think I played great tennis. The day was a little bit cloudy, but now it's really sunny for me. That win is one of the best moments of my career."

Rafael Nadal has stood in Almagro's way on his two previous runs to the quarter-final, and he did not take a set in either match, but he is hopeful it can be third time lucky.

The 12th seed said: "He's the man on clay, and we are trying to be close to him. We are working hard to do our best. It's another match, and I'm ready to fight."

Almagro had a slightly worrying moment when he almost ended up in the crowd attempting to chase down a Tipsarevic shot, and he joked: "I fell on my bottom, but I've got a big bottom so nothing happened."

Tipsarevic had no complaints about the result of the match, which was played in cold, windy and damp conditions.

"He was a better player than me," said the Serb.

"It's very simple. Sure, the weather conditions were not in my favour. It was cold. I couldn't really use my serve as well as I was using it in the previous rounds.

"It was drizzling, which never helps a guy like me who's wearing glasses on court. But all that was maybe 5%."
