Eleventh seed Iveta Benesova described the Edgbaston courts as "not really playable" after being crushed by British wild card Tara Moore on Tuesday.
The Czech crashed out 6-1 6-2 on Court Two at the Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham and was clearly not happy with the surface from the off, shaking her head and shrugging, particularly when her opponent took an early fall on the worn baseline.
By the end she was simply trying to blaze winners and looked like she would rather be anywhere else. The contest was over in just 43 minutes.
Afterwards the world number 53 said: "I think the court is not really playable, but that's the way it is.
"It was very slippery at the back, there were lots of holes and the bounce always different.
"It's my first time in Birmingham and I don't know how the courts looked in previous years."
Stressing her dislike for all grasscourts, Benesova said she regretted coming to the tournament in the first place. Asked if she would return to Birmingham, she replied: "I don't think so."
Heavy rain in recent days, which wiped out Monday's play at the WTA tournament, has not helped the groundstaff prepare the courts, as tournament director Patrick Hughesman pointed out.
He said: "The extreme weather that the whole country is experiencing has proved challenging for all sporting events and we are no different in that respect.
"However, we have focused a lot of attention to our wet-weather provision in the build up to the tournament and overall we are very happy with the improvements we have made. The players, spectators, and staff have some excellent facilities and we have had a lot of positive feedback."
Clearly not at home on the surface, Benesova admitted she "dreaded" the grasscourt season and said she could not wait to get back onto the hardcourts.
She added she was now likely to pull out of the event in 's-Hertogenbosch next week and head straight to Wimbledon.
As for Moore, the British number eight ranked 320th in the world, the win was the biggest of her career.
The 19-year-old possesses a big first serve and used that to good effect hitting six aces. She did not face a single break point in the match.
